CrackBerry App Awards Party Tonight!

It's almost party time folks! We're nearing the end of DevCon10 so it's time to let loose and celebrate! The stage is set for the CrackBerry App Awards Party which takes place TONIGHT. If you're attending DevCon or in San Francisco and want to come by and check it out, just RSVP and jump on the shuttle buses.

CrackBerry Party Details:

  • Location: Xobni Headquarters (click for map). It's a short walk from the Marriott Marquis or better yet, grab one of the shuttles leaving from the Marriott.
  • Free Shuttles: Shuttle buses will start taking people to the party at 6:30pm.  Just head to the front doors of the Marriott. Just look for the person wearing a Xobni shirt and holding a CrackBerry Awards party sign. It'll be one shuttle (that holds 50 people) going back and forth, so if you don't see the shuttle don't panic - it'll be back shortly.
  • Time: The party will be going strong from 7pm to 10pm. Around 8pm we'll do up the awards ceremony portion so there'll be plenty of time to drink before and after.
  • Free Booze:  HELLZ YEAH!
  • CrackBerry.TV: We'll have our big azz CrackBerry.TV camera on hand. If you're a developer and want to show case your app or do a quick interview that'll end up here on the site, you'll have your opportunity. And if not, don't worry... we won't force you.
  • PRIZES!!!! We'll have some sweet prizes we're giving away to some lucky winners in attendance. My favorite of the bunch? An IOU from CrackBerry for a free BlackBerry PlayBook

I think that covers the details.  You can RSVP HERE and we'll see you tonight!!

AT&T announces BlackBerry Curve 3G and BlackBerry Pearl 3G as coming soon

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Bla1ze on 29-09-2010

ATT

After a long wait, AT&T has finally made it public information that they will indeed be offering the BlackBerry Pearl 3G and the BlackBerry Curve 3G. Why exactly, it took AT&T so long to add the Pearl 3G to their line up we're still not really certain as of yet. One guess is that they were waiting for BlackBerry 6 to get to a more ready stage and then make the device available and now, in that time the BlackBerry Curve 3G has also become available. With offering both those and the BlackBerry Torch it gives AT&T a strong BlackBerry lines up and when BlackBerry 6 rolls out for them all, it should put them in line to be the carrier with the most BlackBerry 6 capable devices. Keep reading for the full press release announcement.

BBM Me Up by Riley adds itself to the BBM song rotation

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Adam Zeis on 29-09-2010

The latest email to the tip line let us know that we have yet another BBM song to add to the CrackBerry playlist. This one is by Riley and called BBM Me Up. All about BBM all the time -- the way it should be. This one is pretty good - I'm not sure I like it as much as Ping!!! Me Baby but it gets the job done. You have to hand it to RIM too - they brought out Riz to the DevCon party last night to sing Ping!!! Me Baby live.

It seems like there is a neverending supply of BBM songs and I had no idea there were so many out there. Give it a listen and drop a comment with your thoughts! Thanks Mike!

Introducing Personal Guardian by Smrtphone Solutions, Inc.

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Susan on 29-09-2010

If you’ve ever read any of my reviews on SmrtGuard, then you’re familiar with the feature of SmrtGuard called the Personal Guardian. I love this feature. Beginning today, it’s available separately in the BlackBerry App World for $19.99. What is the Personal Guardian?

It’s your personal guardian when you’re alone or someplace unfamiliar. It allows you to set your BlackBerry Convenience key with a silent alarm after holding it for a few seconds. Here’s the details:

The silent alarm will:
* Dial 911 (or configure a number of your choice)
* Send out Twitter Message with your location information
* Send out Email with your location information
* Send out SMS with your location information
After setting up, Personal Guardian also alerts you when an unauthorized SIMCard is used on your BlackBerry® Smartphone. With the alerts, it will also turn on real time tracking.
Personal Guardian provides a web interface where you can manage your account and track your phone.
Personally I love having the SmrtGuard Pro which has all the features in it, but this is great for that person who only wants the security of knowing they have a way to be sure they’re safe.
SmrtGuard Pro is available in the BlackBerry Sync Store with all the features for three different subscriptions:

What Do You Think About The BlackBerry PlayBook?

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Luis Merlos on 29-09-2010

lb_speed_thumb RIM was not expected to deliver any news at DEVCON regarding the Tablet but they surprised us by announcing the device and having display units to show us. Since most of you have had time to let the news sync we wanted to ask you what do you think about the device, and if you are planning on purchasing one. We have a poll so just check the one that you think would best fit you views on the device.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Luis Merlos on 29-09-2010

Earlier during the week we got a chance to catch up with Robert from Smrtguard, he talked to us about their new application called Personal Guardian. The application is designed to alert via Twitter, E-mail, SMS or even call 911 incase you are in an emergency with a click of a button on the BlackBerry.  The best part is that if your device has a GPS onboard it takes you GPS location and attaches it to the pre-set message.

* Dial 911 (or configure a number of your choice)
* Send out Twitter Message with your location information
* Send out Email with your location information
* Send out SMS with your location information
The price is set at $19.99 at this link

Personal Guardian App Puts Emergency Panic Button at Users Fingertip

SmrtGuard’s One-Push Emergency Alert Increases Personal Safety and Security

PRINCETON, NJ  (September 29, 2010) – SmrtGuard, a leading mobile security and mobile device management company for businesses and consumers, today announced the release of Personal Guardian, an innovative personal safety app for smartphone users. Personal Guardian is a one-push panic button that silently triggers an emergency call, email, SMS text, or Twitter message with your GPS location information. In emergency situations, it’s the fastest and easiest way to quickly alert loved ones, and even 911 emergency centers, that you’re in danger and notify them with the details of your location.

“Personal Guardian was developed to help increase the personal safety of smartphone users everywhere,” said Robert Kao, Founder and CEO of SmrtGuard. “Whether walking home alone at night or venturing into an unknown neighborhood, it provides users with peace of mind knowing that help is just one push of a button away.”

Smartphone owners can easily manage their account from the Personal Guardian web portal to customize emergency alert messages, contact information and recipients, and track the location of their phone. In an emergency, once the panic button is activated, Personal Guardian automatically and silently initiates real-time location tracking and sends a custom emergency message to preconfigured contacts and communication channels including:

  • Dial 911 or other number of your choice.
  • Twitter message with location to your Twitter stream.
  • Email with your custom message and current location information.
  • SMS text message with your current location information.

Personal Guardian is also available as part of SmrtGuard PRO, the company’s flagship mobile security product that includes mobile anti-virus and anti-spam, wireless data backup and restore, remote data wipe, remote GPS tracking and phone locator, call blocker and more.

Personal Guardian is currently available for BlackBerry® smartphones for a one-time purchase of $19.99 that includes lifetime access to the Personal Guardian web portal. Datepedia

Say you're looking to determine the exact calendar date of your favorite holiday or sporting event. Or perhaps you're scrambling to remember how many days are left until your next birthday or anniversary celebration. Wouldn't it be great if there was an easy way to import this information directly into your BlackBerry Calendar? If that sounds useful to you then Mobatech's Datepedia is your app.

Datepedia version 1.0 has already been out for a few years and was previously reviewed by Ryan Blundell back in 2008. And now, almost two years later, Mobatech is ready to release version 2.0 (see press release) and CrackBerry.com got an exclusive first look!

Is ShopSavvy in Our Future?

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by on 29-09-2010

ShopSavvy for BlackBerry

ShopSavvy, the popular Android/iPhone/Windows 7 Phone app, should be coming soon to a BlackBerry near you. ShopSavvy is a barcode reading application - and much more. Basically, you scan a barcode, and ShopSavvy gives you information about the product. In the Android and iPhone versions, users get access to product reviews and local and online pricing. The few BlackBerry scanner apps don't include local, brick-and-mortar stores.

Alex Muse at Big in Japan has let it slip that they've finally completed the back-end work for their BlackBerry scanner. One truly remarkable feat they've accomplished is live barcode scanning. Currently, BB scanners take a picture and analyze it, looking for a barcode. ShopSavvy will be different. Working with live video coming from the camera, the app will focus and scan the barcode automatically. For folks like me who tire of having to take and re-take pictures of barcodes just to get the scanner to work, live scanning is almost a miracle.

The BlackBerry program libraries for the scanner are complete. All that is lacking is the user interface (what most people would call the actual application) to introduce ShopSavvy to the BlackBerry world. With more than six million users and around 1.3 million scans each day, ShopSavvy has a wide base of users. Word on the street is that Big in Japan is looking for a developer to build the BlackBerry UI. Any takers?
