Dan Dodge Explains The QNX Neutrino OS

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Luis Merlos on 30-09-2010

The official BlackBerry blog interviewed Dan Dodge the co-founder and CEO of the company about the OS that will power the BlackBerry PlayBook. Dodge says that if he had to sum up the OS in one word it would be architecture. He also states that “when you look at the qualities that have made QNX Neutrino so successful — reliability, scalability, performance, portability — they are all a natural product of its microkernel architecture. These qualities are baked into the very core of the OS”. One of the things that is cool about the OS is the fact that it is already being used in many electronic operation such as cars, TV broadcasting, chances are at some point you may have already used without even knowing.

BlackBerry barcode and scanner apps decoded

CrackBerry Barcode

We use many types of bar codes in our everyday life. Nearly everything we buy has a UPC code printed on it. The CrackBerry app store features QR codes in the description for every app. Magazines and even books use these codes to rapidly steer their readers to more information.

To make use of all these codes, you need a good scanner. I tested four of them: Edocrab, ScanLife, Sccope, and Microsoft Tag. A good barcode app is one that scans easily, understands a variety of codes, and gets you to the correct information. Only one actually met all of those qualifications.

Redial On! – Call back dropped calls automatically!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by phishgirl3 on 30-09-2010

Redial On!

Dropped calls are a fact of life when you use a cell phone. No matter what carrier you have, or what kind of phone, you will eventually have a dropped call. Redial On! is a small utility application for BlackBerry that will automatically call back for you when your call is dropped due to network error. You simply set up the criteria you want the app to function under, and it runs in the background, ready to spring into action when needed. There are several options you can choose, such as having the app only run during scheduled hours/days and number of redial attemps.

Another aspect to Redial On! is for outgoing calls. It can be really frustrating to need to talk to someone, but when you call all you get is a busy signal. Redial On! can be set to continue trying to call back for you until the call goes through, or for as many times as you set it for. No matter how you use this app, there are a lot of different options so you can customize it to your specific needs.

Redial On! is on sale in the CrackBerry store for $3.99 (normally $5.99), and a free 7 day trial is available. If you live in an area with spotty coverage, or frequently call people who don't have call waiting, this app may be just what you need! Try it out, let us know what you think in the comments below.

Contest: Simplified for BlackBerry Torch by BBThemes. 100 copies to be won!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by phishgirl3 on 30-09-2010

Simplified for Torch

One of the most exciting aspects of being the owner of a BlackBerry Torch is the operating system, BlackBerry 6. While not an entirely new concept for RIM, the new OS gives your BlackBerry screen a nice built-in facelift. Many people like to customize their device with new themes, but until this week when BlackBerry Theme Studio v6.0 beta became available, Torch users were out of luck. There are also people that really love the native look of their BlackBerry and don't use themes at all. Whichever type of user you are, BBThemes has now given you a way to customize your Torch with splashes of subtle color, without losing the look and feel of the OS.

Introducing Simplified. Traditional BB6 UI shines through in 5 different color variations. Red, Purple, Pink, Green and MonoChrome are each available in the CrackBerry store for just $0.99 each! Grab one, or grab them all. For such a low price you can't go wrong. BBThemes posted a giveaway in the forums when they released the theme, so you may still be able to grab a free copy there.

Contest:  BBThemes was kind enough to give us 100 copies of Simplified to give away this week! Just leave a single comment on this post to be entered in the drawing. Contest ends this Sunday at Midnight PDT.

Kobo eBook reader to be pre loaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Bla1ze on 29-09-2010

Kobo

BlackBerry and Kobo have just announced a pretty awesome partnership. In addition to Kobo adding BBM integration to their BlackBerry application, they have now also confirmed the application will come preloaded on the all new BlackBerry PlayBook. Of course, looking back at the BlackBerry PlayBook video one could have guessed that this was coming. As you can see in the above pic from the video, the application is there and running on the device but to outright comfirm preloading of it shows that developers are certainly onboard and highly interested in what the BlackBerry PlayBook is bringing to the table. No press release has been issued as of yet but, the confirmation came through the BlackBerry Twitter account.

Storm2 9520

It's been a while since the BlackBerry 9520 saw any love, so I'm sure a lot of you out there are happy to see OS 5.0.0.973 pop up over at BBLeaks today. Grab your cables and fire up apploader or desktop manager to get started. Remember folks it's a leak, not currently an official OS, take caution. Disclaimers apply as always. Let us know in the comments any changes you see!

*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *
