RIM has been pretty quiet recently with their eBay app. It came out of beta back in June and since then I have used it quite a few times. I still am forced to use the eBay website for some things but it is great for looking up prices and passing time while on the go. It kind of reminds me of the Amazon app yet Amazon still has RIM beat.
Mauricio over at BBRocks noticed that RIM has quietly updated the official eBay app for BlackBerry to version 1.0.1.6. No word on what this new version brings but reports so far seem to indicate its a bug fix and performance improvement update.
You can pick up the update in App World at this link or directly at www.blackberry.com/ebay
Here is to hoping RIM adds a new version with some seller features!

The other week we posed a question to readers of CrackBerry asking what apps they would like to see come to BlackBerry from other smartphone platforms. The post got a pretty solid response with a wide mix of apps and games suggested, so we combed through the comments to assemble a quick Top 10 list. Hopefully some of these developers out there are paying attention!
Top 10 Apps CrackBerry Readers Would Like to See Come to BlackBerry
- Angry Birds
- ESPN / Sportscenter App
- Mint.com
- Tweetdeck
- Weight Watchers
- Plants v. Zombies
- Dropbox (currently in beta for BlackBerry, so this one is coming soon!)
- a better Facebook app! (technically shouldn't be on the list, but we can't help but agree)
- Netflix (an official one)
- Words with Friends.
And there were a LOT more suggestions than that. If you're curious to see them all, jump over to our original post and browse the comments. As for the #1 pick, while the popular Angry Birds iPhone/iPad game doesn't quite meet RIM's definition of a BlackBerry Super App, there's no denying it's one that the people want to see come to BlackBerry (myself included!).
Reminder: Super Apps Challenge Sept 6th Deadline Approaching: While we're talking what apps we'd like to see come to BlackBerry, it's a good time to remind all the BlackBerry Developers out there that September 6th deadline for the BlackBerry Developer Fund's 2010 Super Apps Developer Challenge is almost here. RIM decided to change up the user agent that the BlackBerry browser sends to web servers in BlackBerry 6. From BlackBerry OS 4.2 until 5.0 all Browsers sent a variant of this user agent to web servers:
BlackBerry9000/5.0.0.93 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/179
Now with BlackBerry 6 and the Torch RIM decided to change things up. From what I can tell this was done so that websites designed for the iPhone and Android WebKit browsers would recognize that BlackBerry 6 has a WebKit browser. Here is the new user agent in BlackBerry 6:
Mozilla/5.0 (BlackBerry; U; BlackBerry 9800; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.1+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0.0.141 Mobile Safari/534.1+
I find this new user agent slightly annoying because our scripts used to parse the BlackBerry model number from the first part but now it only gets BlackBerry; U; since RIM moved the model number further down. I am not sure why they did that other than copying the iPhone user agent.
Either way RIM gives us a couple of code samples showing how to recognize a BlackBerry device using the environment variables in a few coding languages. They don’t show you how to extract the model number from both the new and the old user agent but I am working on that. You can see some more details about the change on RIM’s blog at this link.

Much like the BlackBerry Curve 8910, the BlackBerry Curve 8980 is not destined for North America. That said, it sure is an interesting device. It's basically a Bold 9700, put together with the keyboard from a BlackBery Curve. Research In Motion hasn't really been hiding this device either, the latest BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6.0 has a picture of it in the database of devices.
As you can see in the pic above, the device is headed for China Mobile and is a follow up to the BlackBerry Curve 8910 released there not all that long ago on Digital China. The specs for this one are EDGE, WiFi, 3.2MP Camera, 256MB of RAM with a display of 480x360 and GPS. Not sure about you all but, I'd rather have this device then say a BlackBerry Curve 3G. Although, releasing it here would likely cause some brand confusion. Still, be cool to get one of these just to have it. Wonder how one would cost to import? That is, once released.

Gowalla has been going head to head with Foursquare for a long while now in the race to be check in leader. Gowalla though, has announced their updated mobile application for BlackBerry. Previously, the Gowalla application wasn't exactly as robust as that of Foursquares but v1.0 changes a lot of that.
- Trips
- Items
- Take and post photos
- Ability to post threaded comments
The above is a list of new items added to the application. As well. UI enhancements have been made. Since the application was previously beta, Gowall has now put the official stamp on this one and released it to everyone.

Zimbra is a groupware alternative to Microsoft Exchange for companies that supports email, group calendars, and document sharing. They just announced this week that they are releasing a connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 for their solution called the Zimbra Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server 6.5 (ZCB 6.5). It will be released in the first half of Q4 which is right around the corner.
They claim their new connector will provide native synchronization of mail, address book, calendar and tasks to BlackBerry devices and will also support Windows Server 2008 (32- and 64-bit). It is nice to see more and more collaboration suites supporting BES though it would be even nicer if RIM would find a way for companies to not need BES for full email and PIM sync.
You can read more about Zimbra’s announcement at this link or on their product page.

WattPad let us know that they have updated their eBook app for the BlackBerry Torch offering their 100,000+ eBooks on the new device. They keep on touting that they are the #1 BlackBerry App World eBook app but that is mostly because Amazon has not put their Kindle or MobiPocket eBook readers in App World.
If you have been looking for another eBook app for your BlackBerry Torch check out WattPad at www.wattpad.com or in App World. Their app has some nice features like MobiPocket giving you control of the font size and color adjustment capabilities as well as an auto-scroll function for hands-free reading, something I miss in MobiPocket.

We have mentioned the free Forward Reply, and Edit app before which lets you edit the content of the forwarded message before replying. This fixes one of the complaints people have with BlackBerry email where it does not allow you to edit the history of a message when replying and forwarding. That original free version did not work well with OS 5.0 and slowly less and less people used it though it is still available.
Robert let us know that Bberryapp has revived the application and turned it into a premium application along with adding support for OS 5.0+ and the ability to edit a forwarded email AND still leave the attachment. The new Forward Reply, and Edit With Attachment app is up to version 2.2 and is available in App World for $2.99. I do not think you can upgrade the free version to this version but either way I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling it.
Let us know if you give it a spin!
