Stanley Cup Playoffs and your BlackBerry

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ryan Blundell on 30-04-2010

The playoffs are well underway and you can feel the Lower Mainland come alive with hockey fever. For me, it’s nice to see such a diverse community come together to cheer on our hockey team. Team colours worn by pedestrians, car flags go whizzing by, horns honking and drunken fans making fools of themselves; that is hockey! Are you sporting a playoff beard? I’m not and yes, I know, I’m bad for not doing so. The Canucks beat the LA Kings in game 6 and are now moving to round two and one step closer towards the Cup.

During the games, it’s fun to turn to Twitter and see what comments are being made, regardless if they are for or against your team. Though your friends may not be on the couch or at the arena with you, BlackBerry Messenger is there to capture every quip made. What else can you do with your BlackBerry to feed your hockey fanaticism? Perhaps dress is up in your teams colours or even use hockey sound effects as your alert tones. But, what about apps? There are a lot of applications out there that you can use to show off your pride, your knowledge and your passion.

Premium Sweet Cupcakes Theme from Ale7714 Designs

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Vicky Pazienza on 29-04-2010

I was asked by Nadia, a Berryreview reader, to review one of the ‘girly’ themes in our store. Since I am always happy to review a theme for a reader, I readily obliged. Nadia gave me a few to choose from (they were all girly), so I picked Sweet Cupcakes by Ale7714 Designs. Though I do like girly themes, I wasn’t initially attracted to this theme. However, once I loaded it onto my BlackBerry, I really have to admit I took a liking to it. It offers a complete ‘themed’ design along with nice transitions and high quality graphics. If I were the designer, I would have colored the unopened message icons and some notifiers to match the theme more (instead of the default yellow color) and would have also used the same funky font in the messages listing as they used in the menu fonts…but that’s just my opinion.

I did notice on the messages list that the individual email listings seemed to get squished a little (see screen shot right). I did a reboot and the issue was still there. Not major but it’s a review, so I need to be honest. Other than that, I saw no issue with this theme on my 9700.

Sweet Cupcakes is available for basically all BlackBerry devices which is impressive. There’s obviously a lot of time that went into the making of this theme. It only sells for $3.95 which I would say is fair for the theme’s quality of style and ease of use. So Nadia, I hope this gives you an idea of how the theme works.

Sweet Cupcakes can be purchased in our Berryreview Store.

Review: Phone Assistant by Pageonce for BlackBerry Smartphones

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ryan Blundell on 29-04-2010

I think everyone should have a personal assistant; even a personal assistant needs one sometimes. How many times do we watch a movie or TV show and see the typical boss/assistant conversation? You know, you’ve seen them conversing while hastily walking to a meeting or waiting cab- quick updates and instructions are traded and a caffeinated beverage is passed on. It’s awkward, it’s funny and it’s a tired stereotypical work relationship. If an individual is that busy, they will obviously be using a smartphone to send and receive updates and other messages. It makes for a much more accessible and obedient assistant. The question is; who is going to pass them their much needed java? All joking aside, if you find that your time and attention is becoming more and more in demand, you are going to need all the help that you can get.

Before posting an employment opportunity online, you should check out the aptly named Personal Assistant application. Instead of sucking up, Personal Assistant gets right down to business and keeps you in the know, when you need to know. Before I assign it a parking spot on my BlackBerry, I had to make sure Personal Assistant passed the probation period.

TeleNav and Verizon Partner Up To Offer Business Mobility Products To Enterprise Customers

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by David Boyd on 29-04-2010

TeleNav Track

TeleNav is a well known leader in the navigation industry, but few people know that they offer more than just maps and driving directions. TeleNav has been working hard to expand their portfolio by introducing applications such as OnMyWay to the consumer market. Now they have teamed up with Verizon to offer an enterprise solution for business customers.

TeleNav Track is now available to Verizon Wireless enterprise customers. TeleNav Track offers businesses a new way to utilize the BlackBerry devices many of them already have deployed in the field to become more efficient and reduce costs. It also gives the employer the ability to track employee locations in the field, send new job info to their device, allow employees to clock-in directly from their device, and much more.

Pricing for the service is surprisingly inexpensive, with fees ranging from $14.99 to $27.99 per device depending on the level of service chosen. There is also a one-time setup fee of $24.99 per device.

Check out the press release after the jump for more information.

BlackBerry Podcast App Available To Some Beta Zone Testers

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Luis Merlos on 29-04-2010

Capture_on_04-28-2010_22-15-53 Just yesterday BBleaks posted a few screenshots of this app, but some beta zone users have received e-mails to download and test the new app. Reports say there is not much content available to download. I don’t listen to podcast personally but I know some do listen to them. It is nice to see RIM is actively pushing applications out to the beta Zone. So far there is not a lot of apps on there but you can sign up at this link. The layout of the application looks nice, but people have reported that so far you can’t add your own channels.

Encrypted Phone Calls on Your BlackBerry Smartphone with Cellcrypt

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Isaac Kendall on 29-04-2010

Cellcrypt Image

This week at WES 2010, Cellcrypt introduced secure mobile to mobile calling.  Cellcrypt offers BlackBerry users a fully secure private telephone conversation.  This product uses strong End-to-End encryption and is FIPS 140-2 US Government certified, which is the same security rating offered by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This is an ideal solution for corporate business travelers or anyone concerned that their phone conversations may be of interest to 3rd party groups or government agencies.

This product announcement comes on the heels of a December 2009 published "codebook" that cracks the GSM encryption.  This pre-computed codebook is freely available online and requires no more than a laptop and a programmable antenna.

With encryption accredited to the FIPS 140-2 standard (approved by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology), a government official or traveling executive can use their T-Mobile Wi-Fi-enabled BlackBerry smartphone to make classified or confidential calls and be assured that the content of their call is protected to government-level standards.

BlackBerry Podcasts App Now in Beta Zone

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Adam Zeis on 29-04-2010

BlackBerry Podcasts BlackBerry Podcasts

Yesterday some BlackBerry Beta Zone members received and email about the new BlackBerry Podcasts app that is now available for download. This one really flew in out of nowhere, but its great to see RIM dropping some apps that we haven't heard about into the Beta Zone. Reports are mixed so far, but it does look like the app has some potential down the road. There are a variety of options and settings, but for now not such a huge catalog of podcasts to download. The app is only available to Beta Zone members at the moment, and no word of when it will be publicly available. We have no idea what to takes to get included in the available downloads, so for now maybe its best to stick with the CB Podcasts app :-)

RIM’s upcoming Podcast App Gets Leaked!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Scott on 29-04-2010

It’s almost a question of what isn’t RIM working on these days. Our friends at BBLeaks managed to score some screenshots of RIM’s upcoming Podcast App. It seems this new app will allow you to browse and subscribe to podcasts with a simple click of a touchpad or screen. The overall design seems to be similar to RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 6 OS, which was previewed at WES 2010, officially. No real details have been said about the Podcast app, but its interesting to see that RIM is indeed working on one.

What are your thoughts? Do you enjoy podcasts? If so will you listen to them on your BlackBerry?

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Scott on 29-04-2010

It’s been rumored for a while that TELUS off-spring, Koodo Mobile would be launching BlackBerry service on their low cost brand. Today Koodo announced that they will be bringing the popular entry level BlackBerry Curve 8530 to their lineup. Koodo plans to offer the Curve 8530 for $300 outright or $150 with tab (contract-less). They didn’t announce any launch dates, besides saying this Spring. We heard rumors that Koodo may launch the new BlackBerry service late May, with plans focused on social networking. Stay tuned for more details when they arrive.

Press Release:

The BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone makes writing text messages, emails and Facebook updates easier than ever

TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ – Koodo Mobile, Canada’s decidedly different, pay for what you need wireless company, is thrilled to announce the addition of the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone from Research In Motion (RIM) to its line-up later this Spring. Koodo is introducing the BlackBerry Curve in response to consumer demand for a social media friendly, QWERTY handset.

“Since launching as Canada’s back to basics wireless company, Koodo has focused on providing exceptional value by sticking to communication essentials like talk and text,” says Kevin Banderk, Chief Koodo Officer. “For many Koodo customers, easy mobile access to email or social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter has become an essential communication need. The BlackBerry Curve 8530 offers these customers a high-quality smartphone with a full-QWERTY keyboard for easy interactivity with popular social networking sites.”

The BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone comes in charcoal and is expected to retail for $300, or $150 for new customers who put the smartphone on their Tab. Existing customers who have paid their Tab in part or in full can also use the Tab to get the new BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone. Unique to Koodo Mobile, the Tab is an alternative to fixed-term contracts that allows customers to put up to $150 of a phone’s price on their Tab. Ten per cent of each monthly bill is then credited to the Tab. If the customer decides to leave, they simply need to settle their Tab. Some existing customers who have paid off their Tab may be eligible to receive the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone at no additional cost.
