RIM announced their Year-End and Fourth Quarter results today, which you can read on the press release below the break. All in all it was a solid year for RIM when you look at the year over year growth in sales and subscribers, but the stock got beat up a bit in after hours trading as investors expectations were even higher. The two surprises here were the product mix being sold (higher % of lower end devices sold than expected) and that the carriers used this quarter to blow out more of their inventory from their channels.
On the investors conference call, RIM remained very optimistic about where they're at and where they're going. International markets are showing great growth and subscriber numbers in North America, where the competition is heating up, are still solid. Obviously RIM can't talk about unannounced or unreleased products, but on more than one occassion RIM's Co-CEO Jim Balsillie told the analysts on the other end of the line that they'll just have to sit tight to see what's coming and that he was happy with the outlook. Balsillie did mention that WES is coming up at the end of April and there will be quite of bit a news surrounding all parts of the BlackBerry experience (so hopefully we'll see device announcements, software announcements, enterprise announcements, etc.). At one point Balsillie said "if you saw the roadmap you'd be blown away" which leads me to hope we'll be seeing a lot of cool stuff from RIM before this new fiscal year is through.
On a funny note, at one point during the call when talking about some of the recent announcements at Mobile World Congress, Balsillie mentioned the the word "concierge app" along with items that had been announced/released. A little blunder perhaps, as of course we have not seen the personal concierge app get released yet or even acknowledge it as an app that will get released. We have seen screen captures of it pop up however though in RIM developer presenations (with some mistaking it as OS 6.0). But let's hope this means we will in fact see the concierge app get released by RIM. It looks pretty cool! Read on for the release.

Rolling on with the streak of leaks we now have OS 5.0.0.592 for the Curve 8900 courtesy of BBLeaks. I find it hard to believe that we actually go weeks at a time without a leak for any device, and in the last two weeks we've been overloaded with OS leaks. If you're rocking an 8900, give this one a go and let us know how it works. This is a leaked OS, so use caution when installing.
*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). Follow the links below for more information and instructions. *

This Week's BlackBerry Accessory Feature: OtterBox Cases
One afternoon last week in Las Vegas while Dieter and I were walking outside in front of the convention center leaving CTIA, a guy walking beside whipped his iPhone out of his pocket to answer a call but he somehow lost his grip and the iPhone literally went flying through the air before it smashing into the concrete. It happened quick and was painful to watch and both Dieter and I were sure that would now be an iPhone with a broken screen. But as the guy picked it up, I saw he had an OtterBox case on it. He dusted the phone off, all was good, and he kept going on his way as if nothing had happened. In this situation, I guarantee that would not have been the case had that iPhone not been wrapped in a hard case.
Even the best of us are bound to drop our BlackBerrys from time to time. It happens. The outcome of the situation depends on a lot of factors but one thing is certain - having some form of hard protection around your device will help it walk way from more abuse unscathed. I'm a big fan of OtterBox, so keep reading for your chance to win a one for your BlackBerry!

I'm not exactly sure what that icon in the picture is or what screen it took me to is. What I mean by that is of course, aside from the obvious. Clearly it's some sort of application updater which alerts you of out of date applications and advises you to upgrade. But, I've never seen it before and well, it had no reason to show up when it did. So, I figured I would ask you all as well.
The shots were taken from a fresh installation of the leaked OS 5.0.0.586 for the 9700. And despite the newest BlackBerry App World already being installed, it popped up and advised it needed to be downloaded in order to work. Has anyone else come across this "Application Updater" icon or screen? Let us know in the comments if you have or what you think it is exactly.

We mentioned Iconify yesterday a nice app to create shortcuts of your favorite links or contacts on your home screen. We have 10 free codes to giveaway thanks to emacberry.com for sponsoring the giveaway. The app version is now at V1.2.0
The application offers the following features:
In the new build a ‘Novice’ Mode has been introduced which simplifies the GUI drastically – with that step Iconify could be used by everyone – of course all the Options are still available in the Expert-Mode for the BlackBerry Power-Users. Also the “Mail&Dial Combo” Link code has been re-written, so now you will be asked instantly if you want to create a combined link for your contact – also an option allows you to enable a simplified (all in one) Dial & Mail Dialog for such combined Links.

It's been a while since we've done any Celebrity BlackBerry Sighting posts here on the CrackBerry blogs -- I think we just forgot about it somehow -- but these pictures of Kim Kardashian and her BlackBerry taken last week in Miami reminded us we'd better get on it! Yowza!!
Kim Kardashian has been a longtime BlackBerry user. Last time we posted on her she was sporting a Curve 83xx but by the looks of it has now made the jump up to the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Good choice Kim - shoot me an email if you need any tips on what apps to install or accessories to pick up. Three more photos after the jump. Try not to get any drool on your keyboard. :-)

[This review comes from our forum moderators chrisy520 and JeffH]
Garmin is a well-known name in the mobile and handheld GPS market. Garmin Mobile is one of the original GPS apps providing voice turn-by-turn directions for BlackBerry users. While there are numerous options for on-device GPS naviagtion, Garmin is one of the biggest names in the game.
We reviewed Garmin Mobile version 5.4.5 using Verizon Tours running OS 4.7.1.61. Although Garmin's website states the only Verizon BlackBerry supported is the Storm, Garmin Mobile works on our Verizon Tours and presumably will work on any Verizon BlackBerry with autonomous GPS. Garmin has a free 7-day trial, so you can evaluate it for yourself.
