BES Express Questions & Answers, and Live Pictures!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Scott on 28-02-2010

I’m really excited that RIM will be launching their BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express (BES X) server sometime next month. Ronen over at BerryReview got his hands on some great information about BES Express, which explains what we should expect from this new service. Ronen also got some great hands on pictures of BES Express in action… You can see all the pics here.

Continue reading to see all the questions and answers about BES Express…

Will it work on a regular BIS provisioned device?

  • We can confirm 100% that BES Express works on BIS contract devices. The only limitation is that you cannot do a wireless enterprise activation. Instead you will have to cable activate the device with either Desktop Manager, Web Desktop Manager, or BES Admin Web Console. This even works with BIS prepaid SIM cards!

Will wireless OTA PIM (Contacts, Calendar, Etc) work with a BIS provisioned device?

  • We can confirm that PIM synching works on BIS provisioned devices just like it does on BES provisioned devices.

What Features/Components did RIM take out of BES Express?

  • High Availability
  • Database Mirroring (Not say it cannot be done manually via SQL) – Built in BES component has been taken out.
  • Monitoring Core (SNMP monitoring still possible, SNMP Agent DLL still available – still trying to confirm Performance Monitor availability)
  • Enterprise Messaging and Enterprise Social Networking
  • Limited Policies – 35 instead of 450

Will there be a migration path from BPS to BES Express?

  • There is no supported migration path from BPS to BES Express. This is not officially supported and RIM is saying companies must install and re-activate from scratch.

Will there be a migration path from BES Express to BES 5.0 Enterprise?

  • So far RIM is saying that there will be no migration path from BES Express to BES 5.0 Enterprise.
  • THOUGH our source has tested using the Transporter for BES Premium and transported from Premium to Express it did cause BAS errors but no issues with the transport. The reverse was tested from Express to Premium with a successful Validation and transport. This is weird since BPS is supported from BPS to Enterprise in the Transporter.

How will licensing work? Will they be interchangeable?

  • RIM has learned from their licensing mess with BPS and Enterprise that it was possible to go to Enterprise from BPS without paying the upgrade since the same CAL’s used to work. The Express license is now different making use of a different format from that of Premium. The License Manager rejects the use of the Enterprise formatted CAL licenses.

Will there be support for BES Express?

  • Our source calls this a really sticky issue. RIM is saying that there will be almost no support for BES Express. Support will be through the regular online channels like forums, knowledge base, carrier, or third parties. Not sure how this will work out…

What You May Have Missed

Well we kicked off our 3rd birthday celebration, and you can be sure that next week we'll have a TON of awesome stuff to give away. A few contests this past week for some cool apps, and we continued our perfect streak for the podcasts. Not too much great news as of late, but if you missed any action this past week, hit the links below to see what went down.

CrackBerry Editor Fun: The Olympic Hockey Bet: The Vancouver 2010 Olympics wind down today, but before the closing cermemonies take place the sporting action will end in epic style with Canada vs. USA in men's hockey. The United States prevailed in the first Canada/USA encounter at these games and for those who follow Adam (@azeis) or Kevin (@crackberrykevin) on twitter know the patriotism for our home and native lands escalated through the three periods of action. For the finals today, we're putting our wallets where our hearts are with a friendly little wager.... if the USA wins, Kevin is sending Adam down a Macbook (good for CrackBerry Nation, since he'll use it to pump out videos and posts like crazy). But if Canada wins, then Adam is hooking up Kevin with a year's supply of his favorite alcoholic beverage, Campari (you can also follow @camparikevin on twitter). It's going to to be a tale for the ages. Let us know you who you're cheering for in the comment and be sure to tune into the game and into twitter for all the fun!

As some of our long term readers may know, I moderate for the Asia/Pacific BlackBerry forum. Over the past months, we have seen a large increase in the traffic coming from the US/Canada side and through we would do something to appease our readers/members.

We have moved the main server over to your side of the world to give you better speeds and usability on both mobile and desktop based access. With over 65% of visitors coming from the US and Canada, it seemed the logical move. And the best part about it, the overall speed of the site has increased from the Asia/Pacific region as well. A Screensaver And An App That Lets You Keep Track Of Time Any Time

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Susan on 28-02-2010

Any Time v1.0 by MMMOOO is an app that does something really nice. MMMOOO has come out with a few screensavers, and this is another one with some neat features as an app. I have so many friends and family all over, this is really a neat way to be reminded about the time difference, even for events. It also gives new meaning to Any Time…

Any Time is available in the BlackBerry Sync Store and is only $3.99.

The description of Any Time is as follows:

AnyTime enables you to set 2nd timezone time on icon with analogue display, set the timezone list as screensaver with customization inside.

The features are as follows:

  • Select cities in list, or customize the name with own preference as, girlfriend, honey, baby, head office, this function is really sweet! :)
  • Set as many as cities as you prefer regarding worldwide time.

And as with most of MMMOOO’s products, these are the directions:

To install Any Time, download the install files to your PC. Connect your phone to your PC, open your BlackBerry device manager, click Application Loader. Choose AnyTime.alx and install. Reboot your phone and you can find Any Time icon in Download.

I installed Any Time on my BlackBerry Tour 9630. The app becomes a clock icon. Clicking on the icon, you have a blank screen. You click the option button, you see the following options: Add; Delete; Move to top; Move up; Move down; Options; More; Help; About; and Exit.

You will need to add what times zones you’d like to add. You can move them as you wish too. Options allows you to pick the Time Format from 12 to 24 hour options, Screensaver that you set to off or on, and Icon & Name Update Period and to how often.

There are many countries to choose from when you add, and you can customize. In customizing you can either add the country if you know which zone, or you can customize with a name. Like My Boyfriend, My Brother, My Husband, Son, Daughter, etc. Especially if you have someone that is stationed somewhere for duty, or on a trip. I found it nice to especially be reminded of the time differences.

You can then set what time format to view it in, I always go by 12 hours. Then the Screensaver. This is a nice option to have. and how often the name and icon updates.  More takes you to MMMOOO’s options that are apps, more, premium, etc. Help gives you directions on how to fully utilize and navigate Any Time. About gives you the information on the app.

This app is definitely something nice if you want a way to keep track of time differences, want to give the gift of time differences, and feeling a little closer as well. And screensavers for BlackBerry are a nice and new app that I find intriguing. I like the way it shows the time, very useful. Especially if your job keeps you apart, or family lives aways a way. It’s a great asset for you in that point of view.

BlackBerry Super Apps

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Susan on 28-02-2010

Mike Lazaridis had a keynote during MWC 2010 and introduced the term of BlackBerry Super Apps. It’s been confusing to some, and there was even a webinar last week on how to make one.  I know many of us have questions and curiousity, after all what makes an app a Super App? Let’s find out…

So what makes an app a Super App? This is the description that RIM has on their BlackBerry Developer page:

A Super App for BlackBerry smartphones is an app that delivers a compelling user experience by leveraging the unique capabilities of the BlackBerry platform. Super Apps are the kind of apps that people love and use every day because they offer such a seamless, integrated, contextualized and efficient experience.

In reading this, I can see BBM, and where the Twitter for BlackBerry is heading. I can see where the BlackBerry Facebook and MySpace apps could be. Right now I would say that AddOnis is a Super App. There’s quite a few here and there. But let’s find out what the features of a Super App are.

  • The Always On Experience- the app can run in the background without requiring user action.
  • Tight Integration With The Native Apps- this includes the inbox, calendar, address book, phone, camera, and/or browser.
  • Proactive and Notification-Driven-yes, real time notifications and proactive alerts relative to the app and BlackBerry.
  • Highly Contextualized- this can include GPS, messages, contacts, many different possibilities.
  • Social and Connected- The BlackBerry is a very important tool in keeping people connected. Share content, information, and media.
  • Designed For Efficiency- Being able to be used efficiently but also utilizing resources as not to wear on the battery.

After looking at the description I would say even Poynt would qualify as a Super App. But check it out and let us know what you think. If Lazaridis brought up the Super Apps, I’m sure it means there is more in store for us to look forward to with interest and excitement.

Research In Motion Removing Older Versions Of BlackBerry Desktop Manager?

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Bla1ze on 27-02-2010

Research In Motion Removing Older Versions Of BlackBerry Desktop Manager?

Certainly seems that way. Above you can see the AT&T download site where BlackBerry Desktop Manager is to be downloaded for AT&T customers. This list, not too long ago was filled with versions as far back as 4.0 but no longer offers anything less then 4.6. Now while some might just say that's just AT&T pulling them off of there to avoid confusion the same thing can be witnessed across multiple carriers.

Even the Research In Motion website has abolished all versions except for 5.0 iterations on their download page. I'm quite certain this is nothing more than just a little bit of house cleaning, but it was rather surprising to see for the first time. It should help some folks out, that's for sure. Rather then 10 different items users nowhave less chances of downloading an incompatible version.
