QuickLaunch 2.16 Adds Multi-Click Features for Convenience Keys

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-12-2009

quicklaunch-2-16 QuickLaunch was just updated to add a new multi-click feature for your BlackBerry convenience keys. That means you can set a new shortcut for pressing a convenience key twice, thrice, or four times. That makes QuickLauch that much more useful.

You can find QuickLaunch in the store for $2.49 in the store until Jan 1st after which it goes up to $4.99. It does have a limitation for OTA installation only so no desktop installs are available.

New Features in 2.16:

Multi-click Launching
You can now configure QuickLaunch to launch an app / function with a double, triple or quadruple click of a convenience key. In QL Options set the convenience key option to ‘Multi-click’.
If you have QuickLaunch to run from a convenience key a multi-click of your convenience key will launch your configured app/function. If QL is not set to run from a convenience key you can still start quicklaunch from Icon or a hotspot from a QuickLaunch supported theme and then double, triple or quadruple click the convenience key and your configured setting will launch.
Backlight Brightness
You can now set a shortcut to set the desired brightness of the backlight.
A handy feature allowing you quickly dim or brighten the screen.

Most Viewed and Favorite Articles in 2009

December 31st is here, which means it's time for some quality fluff posts! Lol. This one is actually quality without the fluff though, as we roundup the links to some of our most-viewed and favorite content of 2009. The 12 links immediately following were, according to our site analytics, the 12 most-viewed articles on CrackBerry.com in 2009. It's not surprising to see the BlackBerry Tour review be in the #1 spot as it was the earliest review to hit in 2009 of the new hotly-anticipated devices. What's a little more suprising to me though is #11 on the list. I actually did up the video for how to install a microsd card into your BlackBerry back in 2007!! I guess that's still an in-demand help topic among new BlackBerry owners, though I better do up a new video asap as that one is wayyyyy out of date.

Further below you'll also find some our editors' favorites of 2009, as chosen by Bla1ze, Adam, Ryan and myself from articles we each wrote. With nearly 3,000 posts hitting the blogs this year, covering everything in the world of BlackBerry, we all pretty much ended up just picking the first articles that popped into our heads. Those must be the good ones though, right? Enjoy the show. Let us know in the comments what your favorite posts of 2009 were. I have a pretty good idea of where we did good and not so good on the blogs this year in terms of delivering the content you want. As we move into 2010 we're going to turn down the suck, crank up the good stuff and work our hardest to boggle your mind every single day with the best content on the net for BlackBerry owners and enthusiasts. See ya in 2010!

Business Card Reader: Scan Business Cards To Add Contacts To Your Address Book

SHAPE Services has released a new application for those of you who hate inputting information from business cards manually. Business Card Reader is a scanning utility that simply lets you scan a business card and by making use of ABBYY's text recognition technology allows for the extracted information to be added directly to your address book filling in all the appropriate fields. Having tested it on some business cards I have, I found it to be quite accurate in its rendering and identifying of information. Could be quite useful if you deal with business cards quite frequently.

Business Card Reader is available now for $9.95 but SHAPE Services does offer up a 7 day trial for everyone to check out before making a final purchasing choice. Supported devices include BlackBerry Tour, Curve 8900, Storm, Storm 2, Bold 9700 as they all have a higher resolution camera with auto focus to capture the data. Business Card Reader also supports different languages such as English, French, Italian, German and finally, Spanish.

SHAPE Business Card Reader Lets You Scan Cards With Your Camera!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-12-2009

barcode_reader_screenshotJoseph let us know that SHAPE Services has released a new Business Card Reader application for BlackBerry. One of the features I really liked on the Droid was Google Goggles which lets you take a picture of a business card and import it into your contacts.

If you cannot wait for Google to port Goggles to the BlackBerry OS you can do the same thing with Business Card Reader. You just snap a picture of a business card and the app will convert it into a BlackBerry contact. They even have cool features like support for not only English but also French, Italian, German, and Spanish business cards.

The only downside is that unlike Google Goggles which is free this app costs $9.95 though it does have a free 7 day trial. The app is limited to the Tour, Curve 8900, Storm, Storm 2, Bold 9700 probably since they are the only devices with a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus.

Check out Business Card Reader at this link

Installing Apps On Your BlackBerry: One If By Air, Two If By Cord

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Susan C on 30-12-2009

Installing apps on your BlackBerry can be done in two ways. And part of the fun of the BlackBerry is having those apps. Today I’m going to walk you, as a newbie through the basics of installing them. I’m well aware that those of us who have had a BlackBerry know these steps already.

The easiest way to install an app is called ota. What this stands for is over the air. It’s when there’s an app or a download button you click, choose download, and it’s installed right to your phone. Easy simple, sometimes a reboot is required to be sure that it’s installed smoothly, but it’s simple and there are no extra steps. Many of us consider this the preferred method of installation.

The second one is through the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. When I wrote two if by cord, I’m referring to the USB cord and two files that will be part of the installation. Sometimes there are apps you will download by use of a pc, as they come in a zip format. This will install to wherever you designate it to be saved. I always use my desktop. Then you click on the downloaded zip, right click on the file, and extract the files to one you designate. After that, you will see that you now have two files. Sometimes there’s more, an intricate program that runs on the phone and the pc may have the installation for your pc as well as the two files needed for your phone. The two files I’m referring to are a .cod and an .alx. A cod is a compiled java file written for the BlackBerry. The .alx is the BlackBerry application loader file. This is the file your BlackBerry will recognize to load the app on to your phone.

You’ve downloaded your zip file, extracted all files, and now you have your .alx and .cod file ready. What’s next? First, make sure that your BlackBerry Desktop Manager is the most current version. You can check for updates, make sure it’s updated and ready. When you’re sure it’s up to date, bring up your BlackBerry Desktop Manager and connect your BlackBerry with the usb cord to your pc. You should see your pin in the bottom left. When you do you’re ready for the next step.

Click on the Application Loader. Notice that it says: Update, add, or remove device applications. It will bring up your Application Loader. You will see Add/Remove Applications and Update Software. You are going to click on Start in the  Add/Remove Applications. It will read the phone, and then it will search for available device software. This is usually what’s on the phone and there may be options you have not added to your phone, but your newly downloaded app will not be mentioned. If you look on the bottom, there will be two tabs you can click on, Browse and Settings. For this app we are going to add, we’re going to choose Browse. This is going to bring up your pc, and you must go to where your file is saved, and it will allow you to click on the .alx. This is the only file the Application Loader will acknowledge to install. The Loader will add the file, click next, and it will install. In some cases it may take up to thirty minutes, most cases not so long. The phone will reboot and the app will be loaded.

You can also remove an app with the Application Loader by opening the App Loader, letting it read the phone, and then uncheck the app and click next. It will let you know what you’re removing and click next. Phone reboots and the app is gone.

Sometimes a few errors can be corrected by using the App Loader to remove the last app installed and your phone is once again usable with all information in tact. It just takes patience and confidence. There are some advantages to using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager/App Loader over ota in different situations and depending on the circumstances you may find one to be a favorite over the other.

We know many of you received your BlackBerry for Christmas or for New Years and we’re here to help. We’ll be posting tutorials to help you learn something new about your phone and assisting you with mastering the basics and then a few tricks. That disc that came with your BlackBerry is like the lifeline to your phone, for information and your microsd card too.

Palm User Takes on the Storm2 and Bold 9700, Smartphone Round Robin

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Kevin Michaluk on 30-12-2009

Palm User on BlackBerry

We're half way through Week #3 of the 2009 Smartphone Round Robin. If you're a little lost as to who has what device and all that, be sure to visit the latest updates page. There are more devices and sites in this year's Round Robin over previous years, so it's a bit tougher to track but well worth your effort to do so.

While I'm checking out the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi this week, our friend Dieter Bohn of PreCentral.net is giving both the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Storm2 a go. Be sure to watch Dieter's BlackBerry Hands-On First Impressions video and give him a hand on his CrackBerry forum thread. Posting on the forum thread each day gives you a chance to win a new BlackBerry for yourself.

I'm really looking forward to Dieter's final BlackBerry review later this week. In previous years he tended to be pretty harsh on BlackBerry, but I think his natural and amazing Storm2 typing ability has BlackBerry in his good graces this year. We'll have to wait and see how it all unfolds.
