BlackBerry Apps That “May” Help You Keep Your 2010 Resolutions

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-12-2009

NewYearsResolutions The RIM team sent me this following list of apps that will supposedly help you keep your 2010 resolutions. I always found new years resolutions kind of funny since very few people actually keep them. My friends usually choose the resolutions that they will probably never be able to adhere to just to make them again a year later. Maybe we all need a resolution to never make new years resolutions again… Alternatively you can head to the new years resolution generator on your PC for some ideas.

If you still plan on making some check out these apps below at:
www.blackberry.com/appworld/

Kick Bad Habits

  • Is 2010 the year you finally quit smoking? No Smoking can help! The app records how often you smoke and then uses that information to customize a quitting schedule that slowly drops your nicotine levels. ($9.99)
  • Determined to spend less money this year? Keep close track of your finances with apps like Mobile Checkbook and eCheckRegister. Both apps let you record transactions as they happen, check your balance anytime and send banking info to your e-mail inbox. ($7.99 and $12.99)

Get In Shape

  • Get motivated to hit the pavement with RoadRunnerGPS. The app analyzes your workout as you run or walk, and even gives you feedback on your progress.  ($4.99)
  • More likely to workout inside? Check out Pocket Trainer, an interactive fitness app that tracks your progress and automatically advances you to the next level when you’re ready. It offers high quality video and written descriptions for each exercise. And, like a live personal trainer, it will even alert you if you miss a workout! ($12.99)
  • No time to exercise? Every little bit counts, so get moving at work with Stretches@desk, which walks you through a few quick stretching exercises to help your muscles stay loose. ($2.99)

Eat Healthy

  • Making the right food choices can be hard. FoodGauge uses a simple rating system to help you better understand nutrition labels and make healthier choices. ($2.99)
  • Looking to count calories? Calorie Counter by Fat Secret lets you quickly find counts for your favorite foods and keep track of what you’re eating for free.
  • If you need a little more guidance, try Weight Loss Sensei. The app creates a personalized, healthy meal plan complete with recipes and shopping lists based on what and where you like to eat. ($9.99)

Get Organized

  • Get your act together in 2010 with Every Day Lists, an easy-to-use list maker for all your list needs. Keep track of shopping lists, personal to-dos, work assignments and appointments all in place. ($4.99)
  • So much to do in so little time? Role Call Tasks Lite helps you prioritize by filtering your tasks by date, category or importance. The free app syncs with your Outlook calendar, reminds you of deadlines and more.

Grooveshark BlackBerry App Beta With On Demand Streaming Music

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-12-2009

Nick let me know that the popular Grooveshark service has released a BlackBerry app. The main catch is that it is in limited beta right now so it is only for VIP members who pay $3 a month. That kind of scared me off at first until I realized what Grooveshark offers quite a different service when compared to Pandora and Slacker.

2 3

You can choose to play any song INSTANTLY. The only downside is that not all music is available but you can upload your music collection to Grooveshark and then stream it to your BlackBerry. You even have the option to pick your favorite songs to cache to your BlackBerry for listening when you have no coverage. You are also able to create and save playlists along with listen to Grooveshark’s radio stations based on the songs you like. Best of all Grooveshark supposedly works worldwide but I cannot test that…

Check it out at www.grooveshark.com from your BlackBerry or read more at this link.

BlackBerry Application Development – Getting Started

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by michaelwpg on 31-12-2009

Developer

2009 was a HUGE year for BB development. It started with BlackBerry App World, and has steadily snowballed from there. At DEVCON, RIM broke the news on several stunning new additions to the BB development world, highlights being Open GL, the 5.0 API library, and Widgets. With New Year's fast approaching, addicts the world over are looking forward to 2010 as a banner year for development. I am totally pumped to see the offerings brought forward this year by the development community as a whole.

Are you excited at the possibilities? Interested in getting involved, or maybe know someone who is? Perhaps you're already a developer, and you've been thinking about developing for BB? We would love to see what you can do! I would love to see our developer community grow, producing more and better apps for us to toy with.

To get you started, I'm going to compile the best of the links for developers from RIM, and finish off with some reference materials to give you a place to learn from. I'll start with Java apps, then cover Widgets. More info after the jump.

FAQ: Possible Solutions for 907 Invalid COD & Jar Error Error During Wireless OTA Application Installation

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-12-2009

907InvalidCOD-download-failed907InvalidCOD 907InvalidCOD-system-error

Dwhonan posted in our forums that he was having trouble installing the Enhanced Gmail Plugin. He got the classic 907 Invalid COD error while trying to install the application wirelessly. I just assumed he had some issues with his device/OS but Johnny reminded me of a article RIM published back in 2008 that lists the top 10 reasons for getting a Invalid COD or Invalid Jar error during a wireless OTA installation.

Many of the solutions or workarounds require you to be the developer or have access to the server but still it is a great read. Check it out at this link. Its also good to know that there are quite a few other causes for this issue like the one experienced by Documents To Go users. (Credit goes to DataViz for the images)

nRange Golf GPS Turns Your BlackBerry Into a Rangefinder

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-12-2009

nrange I am always amazed at the wealth of golf apps for BlackBerry. The latest to hit my inbox is nRange Golf GPS which promises to replace your rangefinder. Inside the app you can download golf course content and get accurate yardages and aerial maps. It uses the GPS built into your BlackBerry to provide you pinpoint accuracy and even uses it to tell you what course you are nearby to make it easier to find.

The app has a 30-day free trial after which it is $29 for a one year subscription or $85 for a lifetime subscription. I am not sure what the story is with the advertisements in the screenshots… but you can find more information at www.nrange.com.

Features include:

  • Leverages your phone’s existing GPS chip to provide similar accuracy to dedicated devices costing hundreds of dollars
  • Automatic course access via your phone’s internet data connection (unlimited data plans recommended)
  • Automatic listing of the three closest courses to make start-up fast and easy
  • Simple, fast, intuitive interface
  • Distance to front, back, and center of the green
  • Visualization of the green outline
  • Overhead aerial maps of the course with your location and the center of the green
  • Ability to pan and scroll around the course to see distances to specific course features such as landing areas, bunkers, water, trees, etc.
  • Measure any shot distance.
  • Over 16,000 courses in the database
  • Quickly mapping courses to make them available for play (most map requests take less than 2 days to complete)
