Premium Wood Work Theme for the BlackBerry Bold

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Vicky Pazienza on 31-08-2009

Jake from BlackBerry Theme Park hasn’t sent me any theme submissions in a while so I was surprised when he sent in this new one, Wood Work. Available for the BlackBerry 9000, Wood Work is a nice, clean theme with dark, textured backgrounds and colorful icons. It’s also wallpaper friendly which is always an added plus IMO.

My only issue with this theme is it isn’t completely unique, with certain elements that remind me in fact, of another theme I’ve seen floating around. Also, at a cost of $6.99 I think the price is a little steep for a theme of this style. However, to each his own.

Wood Work can be purchased at BlackBerryThemePark.Com

RIM Releases Official BIS 2.8 Documentation With Features – Same Story…

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-08-2009

school_apples This is just further proof that at RIM the right hand rarely speaks to the left hand. This past Friday we posted the details on the upcoming BIS 2.8 features and within hours had an abuse email from RIM’s brilliant commercial legal counsel, Jordan Vaeth, claiming that the disclosure of such information was causing irreparable harm to RIM. RIM has now reversed course and less than 24 hours later they released the documentation themselves (causing incalculable harm) with all the features on their own website with no fanfare.

So now that we are allowed to talk about it again. The features are:

  • Google Contact Synchronization: If subscribers integrate a Google Mail™ account with their BlackBerry® Internet Service account, they can synchronize contacts between the account and the contacts application on their BlackBerry device. Subscribers can add, change, and delete Google Mail contacts from their device or from their Google Mail account and the BlackBerry Internet Service synchronizes the changes.
  • Enhancements to email setup and settings: Automatic Login now supports most billing identifiers, which allows new subscribers with wireless service providers that use PIN, IMEI, or ESN as a billing identifier to create BlackBerry Internet Service accounts from the BlackBerry smartphone, without having to create a login user name and password
    • Note: This feature will be available approximately one week after the BlackBerry Internet Service upgrade.
  • Windows Live™ Hotmail® revalidation: With BlackBerry Internet Service 2.8, new Windows Live Hotmail mail integrations will be defaulted to a protocol that is designed so as not to require 90 day reauthorization.
    • Note: Existing BlackBerry smartphone users accessing Windows Live Hotmail using Microsoft® MSP will still be required to revalidate their Windows Live Hotmail account every 90 days.

via RIM & RIM. Thanks Josep for spotting it!

Contest: Help Rename BerryAddon and You Could Win!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Kevin Michaluk on 31-08-2009

BerryAddon

We first got word of BerryAddon a few weeks ago, and it has quickly become a favorite among the community. The all-in-one utility lets you easily tweak your device by adding a firewall, email signature, vibration features and more. The beta has gone over well with users thus far, and more features are sure to follow. BerryAddon is on its way to a full release and head to BlackBerry App World, but as we all know, RIM frowns upon apps with any "Berry" name in their title.

Since BerryAddon needs a new name, we extend this mission to you, the CrackBerry community. What do you think is the perfect name for this app? BerryAddon is a great fit, but it needs a RIM/BlackBerry-less title to make it App World friendly. Leave a comment on this post with what you think would be the best title for BerryAddon. What do you think BerryAddon should be called? Super Utility? Sir Tweaks-A-Lot? The folks at Twinkler Software will choose what name they think best fits and will rebrand BerryAddon for its journey from here on out. The grand prize winner of the chosen name (1st to submit chosen name if submitted more than once) will receive a full lifetime license for the renamed BerryAddon as well as a $50 ShopCrackBerry.com Gift Certficiate. We also have 50 free copies of the software to give away, and by leaving your comment/name suggestion you will be automatically entered to win. Contest ends this Sunday at Midnight PST. The software should sell for around $14.95 on its full release (should be available for purchase in about a week), so you don't want to miss this chance. Only one comment per person please, and remember you can't use "Berry" in the title. Be sure to follow all the latest news and updates from Twinkler Software on Twitter @twinklersoft as well.

AddresSave: Automatically Saves Senders Email in Address Book

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-08-2009

addressave I am kind of intrigued about Fabian’s latest creation. He just told me about AddresSave which saves the email address and name of incoming senders to your address book. The problem is that this would SERIOUSLY clutter my address book that already is full of people I barely remember…

I really like the idea that every email received on your BlackBerry will then auto-complete when you type it but I am hesitant about the implementation. I really wish there was a way to let them auto-complete but not include them in the regular address book. Or as an alternative only save the email and name of people that you respond to… I know Outlook on my desktop does this pretty decently by remembering the email addresses of people I send email too even though they are not in my address book.

Still it sounds like a pretty interesting feature. I just worry that such an app would clutter my address book like Gmail does with every person I email a few times. Still it could be worth checking out for $1.49 on sale if you were looking for such a feature. After Sep 4 the price goes up to $2.99.

Verizon Lowers Storm Pricing to $50 – Storm 2 Definitely Brewing

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-08-2009

storm2verizon Over the weekend Verizon lowered the price for the BlackBerry Storm to $49.99 with 2 year contract along with their still valid Buy One Get One promotion. This is definitely Verizon clearing stock out before the Storm 2 is announced and released. This is nothing crazy considering other outfits like Amazon and Wirefly have had it for free for quite awhile but still it is a sign of the times.

Bla1ze even spotted the fact that the latest Storm OS 5.0.0.191 had a telltale leak of the Storm 2 user guide. That guide points out the already known inclusion of Wi-Fi but its good to hear.

Lastly the latest rumors on the forums across the web are setting the Storm 2 for release on Sep 29th for B2B and Oct 14th for regular retail. Check out the details at this link.

So what do you think? Are you holding off for a Storm 2?

Desktop Manager: v5.0.1.16 Leaked; 5.0.1.18 Sneak Peek Shows Off New Features – IP Modem and Email Settings!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Kevin Michaluk on 31-08-2009

Desktop Manager for BlackBerry with Tethered Modem Support

Looks like we're kicking off the week with some BlackBerry Desktop Manager news. First, lets talk about the image above. What you're looking at is BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 5.0.1.18 (not currently available) which shows off a new icon that adds an exciting feature to the desktop software - IP Modem (also in .16). The new feature allows you to easily setup your BlackBerry so you can tether it as a modem to your laptop. Be aware of your carrier's tethering charges. Also displayed is a new icon Email Settings that will allow you to create filters or change email forwarding right from your desktop.

While Desktop Manager 5.0.1.18 software is not available yet, over the weekend version 5.0.1.16 leaked onto the interwebs for all to enjoy by our German friends at benezblog. This version may not be the latest and greatest out there, but does include the new IP Modem feature. You can follow the links below to download.

AddresSave – Adding Contacts Made Easy

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Bla1ze on 31-08-2009

Addressave for BlackBerry!

Here's a quick utility from Fabian Heuwiser that was just released the other day. AddresSave allows for automatic adding of contacts that email you with their name and email address being placed in all the correct fields. AddresSave also has built in "blocking" of email addresses as well, so if you don't want to have FaceBook, MySpace or Twitter etc. email addresses being added to your address book you can block them and never have to worry about it.

After having used Gwabbit and Anagram I can safely say I prefer this application over them both as it's simple, no third party servers are involved and it just works in the background with no interference. I can see how some may not appreciate it adding certain items but that is of course a personal preference. For me this is a great alternative. You can download Address Save for only $1.49 until September 4th from the CrckBerry App Store (regular price is $2.99).

iDrive Lite: Free OTA Contacts Backup Service

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-08-2009

idrive Since Picasa Web Albums failed in properly backing up my videos I have been in the market for a new backup solution. I have been keeping a keen eye on SugarSync and Mozy but I did come across iDrive Lite when I was searching and thought it was definitely worth mentioning. There are quite a few contacts backup solutions available currently but not many are free. I guess iDrive is trying to get you hooked so you buy their desktop solution but it worked quite well.

The contacts backup did not seem to backup every piece of information on the contact but it worked like a charm for the basics. The app can:

  • Restore all - Restores all your backed up contacts without overwriting them.
  • Selective restore - Restores only selected backed up contacts to your BlackBerry.
  • Restore contacts from another device – Allows you to restore contacts from another device like iPhone to BlackBerry. :)

Check it out at www.idrivelite.com and let me know what you think!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-08-2009

Picture 1 WAYYY back in 2007 we told you that Benny Chow released a slick free Pacman game for BlackBerrys. Sadly over the years it stopped working in full screen on newer devices due to recent OS improvements. Fast forward to 2009 where cslaten spotted an update by Benny Chow that brings full screen compatibility for the Bold, Tour, & 8900 Curve! Nice work Benny Chow!

Thanks Tashanna for sending this one in!
