BlackBerry Bold Gets Telstra Australia “Blue Tick” For Great Reception – Due to OS 4.6.0.282?

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-07-2009

BlackBerryBold DavidB let me know that the BlackBerry Bold has been awarded Telstra Australia’s “Blue Tick” which recommends devices for handheld use in metro, rural and regional areas. They claim it is because:

Telstra Product Management, Executive Director, Ross Fielding, said Telstra worked with Research In Motion (RIM) to develop a software upgrade that boosted the device’s coverage performance.

If you take a quick gander at Telstra’s device software download website you will see they have upgraded the Bold to OS 4.6.0.282. My guess is that the upgrade is the reason for the new rating. This makes me wonder why AT&T has yet to release the same OS version! AT&T is still sitting with the dated/crappy 4.6.0.167.

So what are you waiting for? Get your “Blue Tick” on and download OS 4.6.0.282!

iPhone is Hackable via SMS? Scary Stuff!

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-07-2009

iphonesmshack Sorry to all the iPhone fanboys. I feel bad kicking the iPhone while it is down but this is just a bit ridiculous. Sith Apprentice sent me a link to an article yesterday about how a iPhone can be totally owned through a malicious text message. This is really just mind blowing!

I know that Nokia had an SMS flaw late last year that blocked all incoming SMS and HTC had a Bluetooth flaw but those had a minimal impact. Today at the Black Hat security conference two security experts, Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner, exposed a iPhone virus that really blows my mind.

Using one crafty SMS message a hacker can remotely control an iPhone including the camera and more and access your address book. The malformed SMS message crashes the iPhone and then when it reboots your phone is owned. You don’t even need to open the message to get hacked it just needs to be received. The two experts reported the hack to apple in July and did not get a response!

Right now iPhone users are more or less safe since hackers have yet to write their own exploit code but doesn’t this seem like some cruel joke? Charlie and Collin look pretty happy with themselves…

Viira 1.3 Released – GTD Solution Gets an Upgrade

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 31-07-2009

viiraWe mentioned Viira back in October of 2008 as a interesting Getting Things Done client for BlackBerrys. Since then it has gone through a few upgrades so I thought it would be worth mentioning it again.

What’s new in 1.3:

  • Track project-less and context-less tasks. Project and Context Views now provide an easy way to locate tasks without a project or a context and prevent these tasks from “slipping through the cracks”. Simply select <No Project> and <No Context> in Projects View and Contexts View and all tasks without a project or context assigned to them will be displayed, respectively. (Thanks Sean for suggesting this one!)
  • Start in Last View Used . A new setting available through Viira’s options lets you start Viira in the last used view, making it easier to return to where you left things off.
  • BlackBerry Storm support. As the momentum behind the BlackBerry Storm adoption grows we are pleased to the Storm to the list of supported devices. Long-time owners of and recent upgraders to the BlackBerry Storm can take full advantage of the device’s unique capabilities like the touch screen and orientation sensitivity to get things done on the go with Viira.
  • Performance enhancements. An engineering optimization put in place in Viira 1.3 drastically boosts the speed with which appointments stay in sync with the native BlackBerry calendar, making it possible to integrate a large number of appointments in your GTD system. (thanks Rajesh for helping us through this one)
  • Appointments sorted chronologically. Day View now lists all appointments in chronological order, making it easier to get a quick and intuitive glance of what lies ahead for any given day.
  • Free trial limits raised. The Viira 1.3 Free Trial comes with raised limits on the number of projects, contexts and tasks.

Viira 1.3 is a free upgrade to all previous owners. To get upgrade OTA point your BlackBerry to  www.kartamobile.com/bb. A free trial of Viira 1.3 is also available.

AT&T Advertisement Shows BlackBerry OS on Nokia E71x

Nokia E71x

Here's a fun Friday story thats good for a chuckle. CrackBerry member Jacob K. was in his local AT&T store last week and saw this ad on the wall for the Nokia E71x. Notice anything odd? If you look closely you can see the banner is clearly that of the BlackBerry OS. Reminds me of this ad that RadioShack ran last year featuring a BlackBerry Curve running Windows Mobile. Thanks to Jacob for sending this in!
