Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Bla1ze on 30-04-2009

Here is a cool contest from Telus And SportsNet. It's play off time for hockey and qualifying teams are all on their way to a long fight for Lord Stanleys cup and with that comes many, many traditions and superstitions. Some players may not change their socks, some may put their gear on in a specific order and others, well others grow big bushy beards and that is not limited to just the teams. Hockey fans get in on the action as well to show their support and growing a beard is just one of many things that goes on during playoffs. This year Telus and SportsNet have teamed up for a wicked contest for the fans that grow the bushiest beard. You and six of your friends could win big.

  • 47” HDTV
  • NHL tickets for next season to see either the Leafs, Senators, Flames, Oilers or Canucks
  • TELUS Mike handsets for their entire crew

As well Telus has set up even more fun for everyone at their site where you can try out the Text to Speech function on devices such as the Curve 8350i. Try it out and you can send friends and family members some funny messages you have personally created.

HOT! RIM Launches Official BlackBerry Blog – Inside BlackBerry

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 30-04-2009

insideblackberry RIM just let me know that they have setup their own official blog! They have teamed together a crack squad of 8 knowledgeable RIM employees to start their blog on a wide range of topics. The blog is called Inside BlackBerry but the domain is not www.insideblackberry.com which goes to a Sprint credit union discount page. The actual address is at blogs.blackberry.com (not sure why the plural is used).

This is HUGE news from RIM. I have always complained that RIM lacked a public side that let them have a direct conversation with customers. The official support forums was a great start in that direction with staffed administrators but starting a blog is the natural next step. Who knows maybe they will have a twitter account by this time next year…

Topics for the blog will be including tips on applications, email, desktop software, handheld software, and handheld products. It looks like there will not be a enterprise section of the blog so far which is an interesting move by RIM. At RIM’s request I offered them a few suggestions on their Blog the first of which is mobilizing their blog since it does not have a mobile version currently. Hopefully this is the start of great new trend at RIM!

With that said I am glad to welcome Becky, Sean, Sanjay, Greg, Mark, Andrey, Mike, Riz, & Annu to the BlackBerry blogosphere. We expect big things from you!

RIM offers this explanation as to why they started the official BlackBerry blog:

  • So why are we doing this?
Because we believe we can make a valuable contribution to the conversation. We do have a slight advantage, after all — smartphones are our life and work.
  • What will we write about?
We’re a team of smartphone experts, each focused on a particular feature, so we’ll write about what we know best. Sean, for example, will write about all of our social applications. Sanjay will tell us all about instant messaging and Mark is our email expert. Andrey will shed light on everything to do with desktop software. Michael and Riz will help us out with device software, and Annu will talk about handheld hardware. Of course the team will continue to grow as we add more experts. Oh, and I’ll occasionally post as well, but for the most part I’ll remain behind the scenes, coordinating the team.
We also realize that this isn’t a one-way dialogue, so we’ll also write about other things that come up in our conversations with you, because that’s really what this blog is all about — having a conversation.
  • What won’t we write about?
We might be experts in our individual areas, but we aren’t experts in everything. Not only that, but we actually aren’t privy to most of the hot topics we know you love to speculate on — RIM’s financials, unreleased products, pricing and carrier information. So unfortunately we won’t be commenting on these areas.
  • What will you do?
You already do more than you know… you talk about smartphones constantly and we listen. What matters to you, matters to us. So when we read a comment or a blog that we feel we can assist on, or help shed some light on, we’ll try and be there. All you need to do is keep doing what you’re doing. But hey, if you also want to add us to your RSS reader, we would be more than thrilled.

Inside Blackberry

It's no secret there are tons of BlackBerry related blogs out in cyberspace, and with new ones popping up every day, some slip under the radar.  We're not really sure how this one managed to slip by, but the latest arrival to the blog party is Inside Blackberry - The Official Blackberry BlogTo our knowledge, there was no press release or announcement of any kind, but from the date on the first post, it looks like the blog popped up around April 15th.  Pretty cool that there is an "official" blog now so we can keep up with the news straight from RIM employees.  Head on over to http://blogs.blackberry.com/ to check it out.

Pandora 1.0.3 Released – Improves Wi-Fi Support & Speed

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 30-04-2009

pandora1Slacker may be doing well but Pandora is still working hard to catch up. Nikolaus let me know that they have released version 1.0.3 of Pandora for BlackBerry which is an upgrade from the previous 1.0.2. Previous versions worked with Wi-Fi but it was not officially supported and was slow on many Wi-Fi devices. It looks like now it is officially supported since the logo is included in the app between the battery and reception indicators.

The only other noticeable difference is that the version number is now shown at the top of the application. Let me know if you notice anything else changed!

You can pick it up OTA by just heading to www.pandora.com from your Berry’s browser or go to www.pandora.com/blackberry from your desktop. If that does not get you the new version try directly OTA at this link.

Verizon Wins Against Warranty Telemarketers

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 30-04-2009

verizon-telemarket A week ago I told you about these annoying warranty telemarketers that call about once a week about your cars factory warranty expiring. It looks like there may be an end in sight. Auto Warranty Services and Explicit Media Voice Solutions have been using auto-dialers against Verizon customers. As we told you before Verizon sued them but now they have received a $50,000 settlement that they have donated to charity. Now if only they could get a court order to destroy all of these auto-dialers…

Hopefully I will never again answer my phone to:

This is your second notice that your factory warranty is about to expire…

The best part is that it looks like Verizon customers will now be spared from these annoying buggers. Sadly AT&T does not seem to have made any headway or at least announced it publicly. I will report back if the calls don’t stop!

via Verizon via Gizmodo

(Image Caption: Between takes on the set of Law & Order SVU, Mariska Hargitay, actress, advocate and the president and founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, accepted a $50,000 donation from Steve Zipperstein, vice president of legal & external affairs and Leigh Schachter, assistant general counsel at Verizon Wireless. A recent settlement with two firms that used illegal methods to telemarket extended auto warranties to Verizon Wireless customers made the donation possible.)

Full press release after the jump:

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless said today it has stopped several companies from calling its customers to offer extended auto warranties. The settlement, reached last month, bars two companies, St. Louis-based National Auto Warranty Services and Florida-based Explicit Media, doing business as Voice Solutions, from telemarketing to Verizon Wireless customers using illegal methods.

Verizon Wireless will donate the $50,000 it received in the settlement to the Joyful Heart Foundation, whose mission is to heal, educate and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse and shed light into the darkness that surrounds these issues.

“This auto warranty scheme has been going on for quite a while, and we’re pleased to have identified and stopped two of the companies responsible for harassing our customers,” said Steven E. Zipperstein, vice president and general counsel of Verizon Wireless. “However, we know that unscrupulous companies and individuals continue to make these calls and offer these products, and we will continue pursuing them aggressively with litigation and referrals to law enforcement to stop them and protect our customers’ privacy.”

“I created the Joyful Heart Foundation to help survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse heal and reclaim their lives,” said Mariska Hargitay, actress, advocate and the president and founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation. “Because of the generosity and vision of individuals and companies like Verizon Wireless, we will serve over 2,000 survivors in this year alone. We are profoundly grateful for this gift, and inspired by Verizon’s efforts to bring hope and healing to lives of so many.”

The lawsuit, originally filed in March 2008 and amended in July of that year, alleged the telemarketers illegally used an autodialer to reach Verizon Wireless customers and used “spoofing” techniques to mask the origin of the calls. Verizon Wireless said that beginning in January 2008, more than 2 million of its customers and employees received calls on their wireless telephones with a pre-recorded voice message indicating that the recipient’s car warranty was about to expire, and encouraging them to press “1” for more information. When a recipient presses “1,” he or she is connected to a person who asks for the make and model of the car. However, if the recipient asks for information about the company offering the policy, the representative simply hangs up and ends the call. Calls like these continue to this day.

This lawsuit, and others filed by the company against telemarketers and wireless spammers, alleged violations of the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which makes it illegal to use an auto-dialer to make calls to wireless phones, as well as state fraud and privacy laws.

Verizon Wireless’ record of protecting customer privacy puts the company at the forefront of the U.S. wireless industry. Over the past several years, Verizon Wireless has won permanent injunctions against individuals and companies that have engaged in illegal telemarketing and text message spamming to Verizon Wireless customers, and against those who have attempted to obtain information about Verizon Wireless customers to sell to third parties. On behalf of its customers, Verizon Wireless has donated tens of thousands of dollars to many domestic violence prevention, law enforcement and other non-profit organizations as a result of these settlements.

Corbis Mobile Site – Quick image search from your BlackBerry

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Vicky on 30-04-2009

corbisI work in advertising/graphic design and use stock photos often for all types of projects. Sometimes, while an idea is fresh in my mind (and I’m not in front of my computer), I like to see what’s available in the way of stock images. Thanks to Corbis, their mobile site allows you to quickly do a search through their images right from your BlackBerry device.

Now keep in mind that this mobile website was really designed for the iPhone (see screen shot to right). Because I am using the Blackberry Bold, it didn’t quite appear this way for me. However, the search itself worked fine (for me anyway) and was fairly easy to use and quick in response.

Once you find the image, and you want to keep it handy, you can opt to download the picture to your phone. I played with the site myself a bit and the images are made for mobile so don’t expect anything really large, however they didn’t seem to have watermarks so I was able to download some images and use as wallpaper on my phone.

If you’re interested, head over to http://m.corbis.com from your BB browser.

Whippoh Simulated Whip For The Storm – 100 Free Copies

Filed Under (Blackberry News) by Ronen Halevy on 30-04-2009

whippoh A bit back I heard that Fabian released this application called BerryWhip (Now called Whippoh). It simulates a whip with your BlackBerry by just performing a whipping move with your BlackBerry in hand. I guess this could be fun at work and at a bar but it kind of reminds me of the useless iPhone apps my friend is always showing off. :)

Giveaway>>> Either way Fabian was kind enough to offer all of you 100 free copies (on sale for $0.99 regularly) so you can get in on the whipping goodness with your Storm. Just use the coupon code bbwhippoh on the product page in the store to pick it up.

From the description:

This is the first application that allows you to simulate a Whip with your BlackBerry. Hold the BlackBerry in your hand and perform the whip-movement, after some practice the device plays the whip sound when you do the correct movement. You can set the sensitivity at when the whipping sound should be played. Alternatively you can press one of the side buttons to play the whip sound.

This application is really fun when you want someone to do something for you - you simply follow your question with the whip sound - look at his/her face! Remember to set permissions to allow in order to use this application and to read the Help-Menu in the application.
Update to v1.1:
- Renamed to Whippoh
- OS 4.7.0.75 sound bug fixed
- Works on every Storm-OS now
