The BlackBerry Pearl 3G (9100) is now officially available from Wind Mobile. The contract-free device is priced at $300 and if you pick one up now you can save 50% off on an accompanying data plan. Monthly plan prices vary depending on your use, but it's overall a good buy and worth being free from a lengthy contract. The Pearl 3G sports Wifi 802.11 wireless n, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G (duh) and SureType keyboard. Head over to the link below for more.

We knew they were coming based on leaks but now they are official. Verizon has brought unlimited monthly prepaid data plans supporting a whole range of BlackBerry devices including the:
- BlackBerry® Curve™ 8330
- BlackBerry® Curve™ 8530
- BlackBerry® Storm™ 9530
- BlackBerry® Storm2™ 9550
- BlackBerry® Tour™ 9630
- BlackBerry® Bold™ 9650
The plans cost $30 a month for unlimited data which is not bad but I wish they also threw in a low end plan for travelers. Hopefully that will come soon though these current set of plans are set to go live on September 28th.
Check out the details in the press release or www.verizonwireless.com/prepaid.

It just keeps on getting better and better. I have always heard that the UN is relatively clueless and passes some ridiculous resolutions but now their Telecommunications Chief decided to comment on the whole BlackBerry encryption issue going on in India and the middle east. That wouldn’t be a bad thing if he didn’t offer such an idiotic opinion.
According to the AP, Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general of the International Telecommunications Union, said that RIM should give law enforcement agencies around the world access to its customers data. According to him these lawful agencies need to access this data to fight terrorism. He told the AP:
Those are genuine requests. There is a need for cooperation between governments and the private sector on security issues.
I just don’t get these kinds of requests. Since the release of PGP and other encryption technologies governments have been forced to accept that there is data they will not be able to access. There are no two ways about it. You can pick up hundreds of solutions that are totally free online to communicate with an encryption strength that is un-crack-able currently.
Maybe Toure should be concerned about these “genuine requests” and ask Cisco to stop selling VPN or firewall software? Or ask Microsoft to stop including VPN and other encryption options in Windows? Or block every website that lets you download encryption programs like OpenSSH, TrueCrypt, GnuPG, PGP, … the list goes on and on.
I wonder how the UN would feel if they suddenly made all UN and NATO communication like email have an encryption backdoor? Then they could offer the solution to Iran because they have a “genuine interest” in knowing what sanctions will be placed on them next. What do you think?

In a nice update RIM has released version 1.2 of the BlackBerry Traffic App beta in App World’s Test Center tonight. There is no word on what the update brings in App World but I got an email from RIM Beta Zone a little earlier today saying that:
We are happy to report that the version of BlackBerry Traffic referenced above (1.2) adds BlackBerry Torch support and important safety warning language. Please note that aside from a few minor tweaks to the user interface (improved banner design and revised icons), no new functionality has been added.
You can pick up the updated BlackBerry Traffic App Beta here in App World
Thanks Nikolaus for the tip!

BlackBerry Torch 9800 Review - Power Socializer
Coming from a BlackBerry that I loved, I wasn't very excited to switch to a device I wasn't used too. The Torch is completely different from any BlackBerry that I have used and to be honest, it is the best. Being a full time student and working a part time job I need a phone that is reliable, has a million features, and can withstand the wear and tear of teenage girl.
As we all know, we wouldn't be on crackberry.com if we didn't, that BlackBerrys are perfect devices for any type of person. Whether you are a business man who needs to stay updated on the stock market or emails, or just a leisure user who loves being able to tether on the beach, BlackBerry is the way to go. I have loved having a reliable device no matter what I need done, whether to send an email, check the latest updates on the coolest social networking sites, and to call, text, and of course BBM all my peeps. Using the Torch makes every single one of these easier.

How many of you still bother to remember peoples phone numbers by heart? It used to be an art form to memorize as many of your friends numbers without having to pull out a address book (the paper kind
).
I was reading an article in the New York Times about how Travis Erickson lost his cellphone on the beach and the series of events that led to his girlfriend breaking up with him. He could not remember her phone number and instead called his ex-girlfriend to ask for his current year-long live in girlfriends number. Needless to say that ended badly but it just goes to show that people rarely remember phone numbers by heart anymore.
The New York Times goes on to say that people have other things to remember like passwords but the repetitive motion of phone numbers is no longer one of them. I wonder if in the future we will bypass the phone number entirely…
I thought I would throw the question out there. Do you know your significant others cellphone number by heart?

I was shopping around for a friend looking for an extra OEM BlackBerry charger for his office and car and noticed prices have dropped even further. Back in June we told you that you could pick up a wall charger for $6.49 on Amazon and a car charger for $12.37. Now those prices have been slashed even further:
Those prices are WAY less than the upwards of $20 that carriers and convenience stores charge for MicroUSB chargers. These chargers are BlackBerry branded so they are not even knockoffs offs or international versions. Now that quite a few device makers have standardized on MicroUSB for charging I think you will get some good use out of these if you plan on stocking up.
Sadly I have not managed to find any good deals on the new slim chargers that RIM is shipping with the BlackBerry Torch. Let me know if you do!

The BlackBerry Curve 3G is the next iteration of one of Research In Motions top selling devices. The latest in the Curve series brings 3G to the GSM side and also boasts its BlackBerry 6 readiness despite having been launched with BlackBerry OS 5 preloaded.
While many BlackBerry users have moved onto a Bold 9700, Bold 9650, Torch or even a Storm series device the Curve series still remains a top seller for Research In Motion and the latest revamp does that particular product line justice.
So no, it's not going to be a device for the hardcore BlackBerry user that needs the latest & greatest but it serves well to those who need a nice, functional and cost effective BlackBerry. It certainly cries out to those out there who may still be using a feature phone and are looking to make the jump to an easy to use smartphone. Read on for the full review after the break.

Unboxing videos. Love em or hate em, you know we gotta do them! The BlackBerry Curve 3G is available on Rogers now, and coming to other carriers soon, so it's time to tear open the box and see what's inside. The BlackBerry Curve 3G is RIM's entry level smartphone, so while it gets decent internals (the same 624MHZ processor that's in the Pearl 3G and Bold 9700), it skimps on other hardware - the low resolution 320 by 240 display is the same as the old Curve 8300 / 8800 series devices used to have and the camera is 2 megapixels without a flash (note, in the video I accidentally say that video recording resolution is the same as the Pearl 3G's thanks to the update to the chipset, but it's not... vid recording on the Curve 3G is still a lowly 320x240).

While a lot of folks were more interested in the fact TELUS was releasing the BlackBerry Torch on September 24th, reading over the announcement it seems as though some important BlackBerry App World news got overlooked. The press related the majority of the information to the device launch but near the bottom it was noted:
TELUS is excited to be the first carrier in Canada to offer clients the ability to pay for their BlackBerry App World purchases on their mobile phone bill as well as through credit card payment. This ability will be available prior to the BlackBerry Torch launch.
That's great news for TELUS customers and a huge advancement for BlackBerry App World in the Canadian market. While some not really look at it as being a huge thing, it means quite a bit. Especially, for those who develop BlackBerry applications as their goods will now be more accessible then ever.
